Women’s History Month Shabbat, Film, and In-Person Discussion

  • 626 Mission Bay Boulevard North San Francisco, CA, 94158 United States (map)

Dear Members,

We are excited to celebrate this year’s Women’s History Month with you!

Women’s History Month is a time to highlight and celebrate the vital contributions of women and events in history and contemporary society that have and continue to impact women. Legitimizing Women’s History Month is an act of advocacy within itself. In 1981, Congress requested the President to declare the week of March 7th 1982, as “Women’s History Week”. In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress designated the entire month of March as “Women’s History Month”. Congress later dedicated the month of March (each year) as "Women’s History Month".

In 1975, March 8th became known as ‘International Women’s Day’, as the concept of a “woman’s day” had caught on in Russia, China, and Spain. By 2014, “International Women’s Day” was celebrated in more than 100 countries and had been made an official holiday in more than 25. International Women's Day recognizes diverse women for their achievements, promoting inclusivity and intersectionality.

Unfortunately, Black and Jewish women have often been silenced and excluded from women’s history and American history in general. Additionally, few Black and Jewish women are recognized for their contributions and when they are, it is the same handful of women.

This year for Women’s History Month, the Coalition will highlight seven Black and Jewish women, who aren't celebrated enough but have markedly contributed to the advancement of women of all colors, as well as the advancement of their communities. During March we will highlight a different woman and an abbreviated summary of her work and contributions.

The theme for Women's History Month 2025 is "Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations". The National Women's History Alliance (NWHA) chose this theme to celebrate women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship, and leadership.

Please tune in weekly as we celebrate these contributors; communication will be sent out every Sunday (via email) in March.

Additionally, we will meet in person for a Women’s History Month wrap-up gathering on Friday, March 28th at 6:00 PM.

Gathering Address:

626 Mission Bay Blvd North

San Francisco, CA 94158

The Unity Coalition is hosting Shabbat, where we will eat, watch a film titled The Six Triple Eight and discuss, and reflect on this year’s Women's History Month, until about 9 PM.

Shabbat will be potluck style; please bring a dish you want to share with the group!

Register here for our in-person gathering.

The Six Triple Eight is a movie based on the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a unit of Black women in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War II. Eight hundred and fifty-five join the war effort to address a three-year mail backlog. Despite discrimination and war-torn conditions, they sort over seventeen million pieces of mail ahead of schedule. Additionally, one of the film’s main characters has a budding romance with a Jewish soldier who is soon to deploy.
