Hi Folks,
Please welcome Arieann Harrison as our guest speaker at this month’s General Meeting on Thursday, April 10th at 6 PM.
We are honored to highlight and celebrate the vital contributions of Marie Harrison and Arieann Harrison and the Marie Harrison Community Foundation in San Francisco!
Arieann Harrison is the Founder and Executive Director of the Marie Harrison Community Foundation. Arieann is a San Francisco District 10 resident and has lived and worked in the Bayview Community for 30+ years. Her work includes providing social services, employment opportunities, and community resources and engaging in environmental advocacy with local D10 residents. She takes an all-inclusive, solutions-based approach to providing adequate information for the best outcome that will lead to the preservation of life. She is a true change-maker regarding social, environmental, and economic justice. Arieann and the Marie Harrison Community Foundation support and advocate for their community by finding/creating a path forward within systems that do not see the many challenges in communities of color as human rights issues.
The foundation has strong community ties, allies, and partnerships from various walks of life, with the knowledge that it will take all of us to push for change. They welcome all passionate about uplifting and fighting for something bigger than themselves!
Marie Harrison, AKA The Mother of Environmental Justice, is a Bayview Hunters Point and San Francisco legend. She taught folks how to survive and inspired so many to thrive, to fear nothing and no one, and to speak truth to power!
Marie Harrison came to San Francisco as a teenager with her mother and eight siblings in 1966, going to work at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard while still in her teens. Marie brought together the human and environmental– focusing on the health and well-being of the people around her and future generations, fearlessly calling out leaders and bringing the community together through heroic work fighting economic racism in Hunters Point!
Marie died in 2019 from a rare (for a non-smoker) lung disease, undoubtedly caused by the pollutants that many former Shipyard workers and Bayview/Hunters Point residents are exposed to.
Her legacy includes successfully shutting down the highly radioactive, 77-year-old PG&E plant in 2006 and spending decades exposing deadly toxins at the Hunters Point Shipyard concealed by private interests, bringing national attention to the issue, which continues to affect the community today.
At our meeting, Arieann Harrison will discuss the work of the Marie Harrison Community Foundation, issue a call to action, and lead a Q&A session to engage us in meaningful dialogue.

“Environmental justice [means that] no community should be saddled with more environmental burdens and less environmental benefits than any other.”

Our grassroots organization, comprising social activists from the Black and Jewish communities and a community of allies, meets monthly (the second Thursday of each month) to provide a forum for community leaders within and outside the Coalition to announce new initiatives and provide updates on continued initiatives. Additionally, we identify activism efforts connected to our four strategic focus areas. We work as a large group on issues concerning Criminal Justice and Prison Reform, Community and Economic Development, Health and Environmental Affairs, and Civic Engagement.
